Innovation For Humanity

Why do we innovate? Other than commercial purpose, does innovation work? Interestingly, any tool or technology that human beings have invented is neutral on itself, but we tend to take advantage of those inventions for profit-making purpose, and succeeded. What if we utilize those inventions for serving humanity needs without maximizing the profits to ourselves? This Peer-to-Peer technology seem to have a lot of potential in this direction.
